Australian businessman Mark Bouris has strongly criticised the Labor Government’s deal with the Greens to ban the use of Self Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) to purchase investment properties from mid-August.
He has described the policy as “un-Australian” and said it unfairly targets ordinary Australians.
“I don’t understand the logic. I think what they are trying to do is discourage property investment altogether… I don’t know what country I’m living in anymore,” he said.
Bouris claimed the changes were prompting some Australians to consider leaving the country, adding: “I know so many people talking about how to become non-residents… These are people who own businesses, employ people… Just good quality Australians – they are jack of the joint.”
Rejecting claims the reforms affect billionaires, he said: “It’s not billionaires… This is plumbers and electricians – ordinary, hard-working Australians who have decided to be bold and take control of their own self-managed super fund.”
Bouris also accused Labor of allowing “ideology” to outweigh practical policy, saying: “The Labor party were once upon a time a formidable machine… Now Labor looks like some individuals are letting ideology get ahead of what Australians really want.”
