Elion Society of SA celebrates 54 years and unveils revitalised community facility

Festivities were in full swing at the Elion Society of South Australia “The Olympic Flame” (ESSA) over the weekend as members and supporters gathered to celebrate the Society’s 54th anniversary at its annual luncheon.

This year’s celebrations carried added significance with the unveiling of the Society’s newly revitalised function space, a major milestone in the organisation’s ongoing commitment to serving its community.

Founded in 1972, the Elion Society was established to represent the historic region of Elis (Elia) in north-western Peloponnese, Greece. Renowned as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Elis is home to Ancient Olympia, where the first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. For more than five decades, the Society has worked to preserve and promote the cultural traditions, values and heritage of this historic region among South Australia’s Greek community.

At the event, President of the Elion Society, Spiros Perdikoyiannis, reflected on the organisation’s recent efforts to modernise and strengthen its facilities. He said that approximately 18 months ago, the Society embarked on a journey to revitalise its premises, transforming what was once an ageing and under-utilised space into a modern and versatile venue capable of hosting weddings, dances, meetings and a wide range of community functions.

The Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP, Treasurer of South Australia, expressed his pride in the government’s support for the redevelopment project and praised both past and present generations of the Society for their contribution to the community.

“This was a shed built by people who wanted to create partnership and brotherhood, get together and exchange fellowship because the secret to long life is partnership, it’s company. And what has happened now is the next generation has stood up… and they have done this amazing transformation,” Koutsantonis said.

“To all the migrants who came out so far away and have built this piece of property in Torrensville that means so much to the Elion society, I’m glad it’s going to be continuing.”

Mr Perdikoyiannis noted that the redevelopment project is not yet complete, with further improvements planned ahead of the facility’s official opening. Future works will include the creation of a fresco-style outdoor area designed to provide additional recreational and gathering spaces for members and families, particularly during the warmer months.

Speaking about the Society’s future aspirations, Mr Perdikoyiannis emphasised the importance of supporting both younger and older generations within the community.

“We’ve got a vision to move forward for… the next generation, trying to keep the maintenance, the vision moving forward for our children too,” he said.

The Society’s President emphasised the importance of supporting both younger and older generations within the community.

Following Mr Perdikoyiannis’ address, members of the ESSA dance group, dressed as ancient priestesses, performed a symbolic procession depicting the lighting of the Olympic Flame, inspired by the ancient traditions of Olympia.

The performance was accompanied by a re-enactment of the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Torch, marking the beginning of the Olympic Torch Relay, the internationally recognised journey that carries the flame from Ancient Olympia to the host city of each modern Olympic Games.

Following the formal proceedings, speeches and cultural performances, attendees were invited to join in the celebrations through traditional music, dancing and fellowship.

The event served as a fitting celebration of the Elion Society’s enduring contribution to South Australian Hellenism and highlighted a promising future as the organisation continues to invest in its facilities, members and younger generations.
