The long-abandoned Mick Skorpos Discount Petrol King site on Marion Rd in South Australia’s Ascot Park could soon be redeveloped into a modern service station with fast food and electric vehicle charging facilities.
Once known for its discounted fuel prices, the former petrol station operated by Mick Skorpos has sat boarded up and covered in graffiti for more than a decade beside Ascot Park Primary School.
Developer Agostino Group lodged a development application last month proposing a partial demolition and rebuild of the site, including new fuel pumps, underground tanks, EV charging stations, fencing, lighting and parking.
The plans also include a fast-food drive-through, although development documents do not specify which brand will occupy the location. Agostino Group owns AMPM Convenience Stores and service stations, along with Subway and Carl’s Jr franchises in South Australia.
Historic images of the site show Skorpos promoting fuel prices as low as 39.9 cents per litre in 1986, helping cement the business’s reputation as a popular low-cost fuel destination.
Marion Mayor Kris Hanna welcomed the proposal, describing the site as an “eyesore for too many years.”
“The whole community is very pleased to see something positive come out of this,” he said.
“It sounds like it’s going to be a service station with more convenience than most. And we know that people are time short and they’re going to be very attracted to convenience.”
Hanna added the Marion Rd location was ideal due to the “tens of thousands of cars” using the road each day.
The application, lodged on April 2, has been referred to the Commissioner of Highways and the Environment Protection Authority, with building approvals to follow if planning consent is granted.
