The Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria successfully hosted its annual Protomayia Festival on Sunday, May 3, at Axion Esti Monastery in Northcote.
People travelled from across Melbourne to attend, filling the venue and creating a warm festive atmosphere.
Guests were welcomed with the traditional Easter greeting “Christos Anesti,” while His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora and Fr Phillip of Axion Esti were warmly thanked for use of the venue.
A moving moment took place early in the day when attendees observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late Sofia Mastoris, remembered as the pioneer who began Melbourne’s Protomayia celebrations 26 years ago. Tribute was also paid to women in the community who have passed away.
The event attracted a strong list of dignitaries and community leaders, including MPs Kat Theophanous and Nathan Lambert, VMC Chair, Viv Nguyen, councillors and mayors Emily Dimitriadis, Virginia Tachos and Christine Stow, along with GCM Vice President Anthea Sidiropoulos, and Theo Theophanous, President of the Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria.
Speeches highlighted the significance of Protomayia in Greece as both a celebration of flowers and spring, and a day recognising workers’ rights.
Guests enjoyed music, dancing and festivities throughout the afternoon, with a highlight being performances by the new dance group from the Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria.
Prizes and certificates were awarded for best floral outfits, dancing and participation, adding a fun and vibrant touch to the celebration.
Cypriot Style Entertainment were thanked for keeping the crowd dancing. The event reaffirmed Protomayia’s place as a cherished tradition for Melbourne’s Greek community in the past, present and for generations to come.
