Kospetas family expands Sydney pub empire with Carlisle Castle Hotel purchase

·

The Kospetas family, owners of Universal Hotels, have expanded their Sydney pub portfolio with the purchase of the historic Carlisle Castle Hotel, marking the venue’s first change of ownership in six decades.

Located in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Newtown, the landmark hotel sold at the end of April after spending around 10 months on the market.

The acquisition adds another venue to Universal Hotels’ growing collection, which already includes the Oxford Hotel and the Civic Hotel, among roughly 15 hospitality venues operated across Sydney.

The hotel had remained in the hands of the Hassett family for 60 years, making the sale a significant moment for one of Newtown’s longstanding pubs.

Hotel brokerage firm MQ and Associates handled the transaction, with director Leonard Bongiovanni describing the listing as a “generational opportunity” and pointing to strong buyer appetite for tightly held inner-city pub assets.

The purchase continues a period of expansion for Universal Hotels, which reportedly acquired five pubs during 2025 alone, reflecting a broader trend of consolidation across Sydney’s hospitality sector.

Industry agents say demand remains strong for character-filled metropolitan hotels with redevelopment or operational upside, particularly in tightly held urban locations.

While the final sale price was not disclosed, the level of interest generated throughout the campaign underscored the resilience of the Australian pub market, which continues to attract investment from both local and international buyers.
