ANZAC Day commemorated at Australian–Hellenic Memorial in Melbourne

·

The Greek Orthodox Diocese of Chora has commemorated ANZAC Day with a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony honouring Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in war.

The service was held on Sunday, April 26, at the Parish of the Transfiguration of Our Lord in Thomastown, at the Australian–Hellenic Memorial in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, organised under the auspices of Greek Australian commemorative organisations.

Matins and the Divine Liturgy preceded the ceremony, led by His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora, who then conducted the memorial service for the fallen.

During the event, Bishop Evmenios conveyed “the paternal wishes and blessings” of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and read his official ANZAC Day message.

Attendees included Greek Consul General in Melbourne, Dimitra Georgantzoglou, along with representatives of the Victorian state government, the armed forces, Greek Australian organisations and diaspora schools.

Students also delivered short speeches and recited poems in tribute to the fallen, adding to the solemn tone of the ceremony.

The event concluded with wreath-laying by representatives of the church, state and Greek diaspora community.
