Alleged Croydon Park gunman Artemios Mintzas faces court

·

Artemios Mintzas, the 60-year-old man accused of firing up to 50 bullets at random in Sydney’s inner west, has faced court for the first time following Sunday night’s Croydon Park shooting that left more than a dozen people injured.

Police allege Mintzas opened fire from his apartment on Georges River Road, injuring multiple people, including a man who remains in a serious condition after being shot in the neck.

The suburb was placed in lockdown for several hours before tactical officers arrested Mintzas following a nearly two-hour standoff.

He has been charged with 25 offences, including 18 counts of shooting with intent to murder.

At Burwood Local Court on Tuesday, October 7, the hearing briefly descended into confusion when two lawyers each claimed to represent Mintzas, prompting a tense exchange.

The matter was resolved after Mintzas was brought up from the cells and confirmed barrister Dymphna Hawkins as his lawyer, apologising to the court for the mix-up.

Wearing a blue jumper and bearing visible scars on his face, Mintzas did not apply for bail. His lawyer said she would review the brief of evidence ahead of his next court appearance in December.
