Malaysian fugitive allegedly hiding in China using Greek alias and forged Australian passport

·

Fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low is reportedly living in China under the Greek alias Constantinos Achilles Veis using a forged Australian passport, according to investigative outlet Brazen.

Low, accused of masterminding Malaysia’s largest corruption scandal involving the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund, is said to be residing in an upscale Shanghai neighbourhood.

Malaysian and US investigators allege he helped former Prime Minister Najib Razak orchestrate a $US4.5 billion ($6.8 billion) international fraud scheme.

While Low has maintained his innocence, both his Cypriot and St Kitts and Nevis citizenships have been revoked.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had no official confirmation of Low’s whereabouts, telling state news agency Bernama: “I have no information… I need to verify with the home minister.”

Despite a 2019 US settlement recouping $US1 billion, Low remains wanted by authorities. Assets linked to the case, including the superyacht Equanimity, have been seized and sold, with proceeds returned to Malaysia.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Federal Police have not commented on the alleged forged passport. Australia introduced the R Series passport in 2023, designed to make forgeries more difficult.
