Cricketer Sam Konstas confirmed as opener for first West Indies Test

·

Australian captain Pat Cummins has confirmed the line-up for the first Test against the West Indies, with 19-year-old Sam Konstas returning to the side as opening batsman alongside veteran Usman Khawaja.

Konstas replaces Marnus Labuschagne, who has been dropped, while Josh Inglis also comes back into the side at No.4, stepping in for the injured Steve Smith. Inglis previously impressed with a century on debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Cameron Green will bat at No.3, with Cummins backing the all-rounder as a long-term option in the position, despite his limited returns in the role so far.

Beau Webster retains his place in the side at No.6, while Alex Carey will keep wicket.

Australia has opted for a pace-heavy attack, resisting the temptation to pick two frontline spinners. Cummins noted uncertainty about the pitch in Barbados but suggested it should suit the fast bowlers early on.

Konstas made his debut on Boxing Day at the MCG, scoring 60 against India, though he has since struggled for consistency. He scored a Sheffield Shield century in February.

The first Test begins at midnight Wednesday AEST.
