Rebetiko revival: Melbourne event transports guests to the heart of 1920s Greece

·

The Hellenic Women’s Network of Victoria, Heliades Inc., in collaboration with EEAMA, hosted a vibrant cultural afternoon dedicated to the timeless spirit of Rebetiko on Sunday, June 8.

Held in a warm and nostalgic setting, the event brought together music, history, and dance, honouring a genre that has left a deep imprint on Hellenic culture.

Guests were captivated by Victoria Papazoglou, whose in-depth narration traced the rich history and evolution of Rebetiko music and dance. Her storytelling transported the audience across decades, from its early roots in the alleys of Smyrna and the ports of Piraeus, to its enduring influence today.

Adding to the immersive experience, Christos Konstantinidis and his dance troupe delivered a live performance of traditional Rebetiko dances, evoking memories of Greece’s past with authenticity and flair.

Following the formal segment, the celebration came to life with live Rebetiko music by Elias Hatziemmanuil and Dean Georgalas, who invited all attendees to take to the dance floor and revel in the joyful atmosphere.

The venue itself, decorated by Christos Sardelis, recreated the ambience of a 1920s café — reminiscent of old Smyrna, Psiri, or Piraeus — setting the perfect backdrop for an afternoon steeped in nostalgia and cultural pride.

The event was a resounding success, uniting generations in celebration of Greece’s rich musical heritage.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this event,” Heliades President Niki Matziaris-Garay said.
