Basil Zempilas launches campaign to become Perth’s next Lord Mayor

·

Greek Australian radio host Basil Zempilas announced on his social media platforms that he will be running as Perth’s next Lord Mayor in the upcoming WA elections.

Sharing an exclusive from The West Australian announcing his run for office, Basil shared to the newspaper his wish for the people of Western Australia “to be proud of their capital city again.”

“I want to bring my leadership, energy, work ethic, independence and ideas to our city,” Zempilas said on his Instagram page.

“And I’m hugely motivated to change the conversation around Perth – enough of the negative, let’s celebrate all the good things about Perth and unlock it’s enormous potential.”

Zempilas first expressed his interest in running for the Perth office in February this year, saying the delayed mayoral election provided the perfect opportunity for him to do so.

“I’ve always said I know I have the passion but I haven’t been sure I have the time,” he previously said on his breakfast radio show.

“I live in the city, work in the city and walk through the city every day and I, like all West Aussies, expect our capital to be safer, cleaner, cheaper, more accessible, more vibrant and friendlier.”

The Channel 7 sports presenter called on his followers in the announcement, asking people what “great things we can do.”

Basil Zempilas has worked on sport broadcasts and as a co-host of Sunrise, and currently co-hosts Perth radio station 6PR’s breakfast program with Steve Mills.
