Melbourne Greeks indulge in authentic food and culture at Oakleigh Glendi

A celebration of Greek food, culture, music and dancing took place over the weekend in the Greek-populated suburb of Oakleigh in Melbourne, Victoria.

The annual two-day Oakleigh Glendi was held in Warrawee Park from November 4-5.

The festival featured live music performances from Kinisi band and Maria Maroulis, as well as traditional dancing by local and national Greek dance groups.

On the day, there was also a wide array of artisan food stalls on display where people could come and enjoy the taste of authentic Greek food, as well as purchase handmade and Greek-imported jewellery, art, craft, clothing, and more.

It was a weekend filled with family-fun for everyone, with plenty of amusements, kids’ rides, cooking demonstrations and activities to participate in.

The Glendi also featured a raffle, a show by OPA Dance Darwin, a performance by students from Oakleigh Grammar and a loukoumades eating competition where everyone with a sweet tooth could enter and enjoy.

Over the two days, the park was packed with Melbourne’s Greek and wider community, including a number of politicians and community leaders such as the Federal Minister for Multiculturalism, Andrew Giles; the Victorian Minister for Tourism and Member for Oakleigh, Steve Dimopoulos; Member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos MP; and the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Bill Papastergiadis.
