Haris Doukas takes surprise victory in Athens mayoral elections

·

There were historic levels of abstention during the second round of municipal elections across Greece over the weekend, with Athens’ mayoral race taking the spotlight.

Ekathimerini reported that candidate Haris Doukas, who is backed by PASOK, claimed the title of mayor in the Athenian elections on Sunday, 15 October, taking over from incumbent mayor Kostas Bakoyannis.

Mr Doukas secured 55.96 per cent of the votes.

Mr Bakoyannis said he and his team would be at Mr Doukas’ disposal during the transition.

“A while ago I contacted Mr Doukas and congratulated him warmly on the great victory,” Mr Bakoyannis said.

“I am solely responsible for the outcome… I thank the Athenians for the opportunity they gave me to serve them. I’m leaving the town hall with my head held high.”

These results caused a political upset, as Mr Bakoyannis came out with 41.35 per cent of votes in the first round of polls the previous Sunday (October 8).

Other poll results around Greece were also released. These include:

  • In Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis led with 67.22 per cent of votes against Konstantinos Zervas.
  • In Patras, Kostas Peletidis won his third term with 75 per cent of votes counted, receiving 56.86 percent over Konstantinos Svolis.
  • In Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis leads with 51.19 per cent.
  • In the North Aegean, Kostas Moutzouris leads with 52.63 per cent.
  • In Western Macedonia, Giorgos Amanatidis leads with 56.40 per cent.
  • In Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas leads with 58.86 per cent.
  • In the Ionian Islands, Yannis Trepeklis is first with 66.1 per cent.
  • In the Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos leads with 52.14 per cent.
