Yiamas Greek restaurant in Perth, Western Australia, has been named finalist for ‘Best New Restaurant’ in the annual Gourmet Traveller awards.

Only open since March, this contemporary Greek taverna has become a fast favourite of foodies and critics alike.

According to The Gourmet Traveller, Yiamas is all about “Ancient Athens goes modern Australian.”

Food offered by Yiamas in Perth, Western Australia.

“Rather than lean on Hellenic tropes, this contemporary Greco fantasy is about thoughtful restaurant craft,” the review said.

“The intimate white-washed dining room smoulders while the drinks list takes a grown-up approach to Greek winemaking and distilling.”

Led by Justin Scarvaci, the chef applies new-school thinking to dolmades, bakaliaros and other classics.

In a post on Facebook, the Yiamas team said they were excited to be named finalists in the awards.

“We’re overjoyed to be named as a finalist for best new restaurant in the Gourmet Traveller annual restaurant awards. Congrats team!” the post read.

The winners of the Gourmet Traveller awards will be announced next month.
