Oakleigh Cannons and Heidelberg United to face-off for Dockerty Cup

·

The illustrious Dockerty Cup is up for grabs on Friday, August 4 as the Oakleigh Cannons and Heidelberg United will face-off for silverware at Kingston Heath.

Named after football pioneer and Football Victoria Hall of Fame member Harry Dockerty, the tournament was first played in 1909 and carries a coveted history.

The Oakleigh Cannons are seeking redemption after losing last year’s final 2-1 in a thrilling affair against the Bentleigh Greens. The Cannons would go on to bounce back in 2022, winning the NPL Victoria and now in 2023 are once again proving to be one our state’s strongest outfits.

Oakleigh booked their ticket to the final with a 3-1 victory against the Melbourne Knights, with Clark and Sinclair opening the scoring before second-half substitute Alex Salmon netted in stoppage time to secure the result.

Their opponents Heidelberg United have had an inconsistent 2023, but have the quality and experience to head into the match with confidence.

The Bergers faced a tricky away day in the semi-finals, travelling to Shepparton to take on the Goulburn Valley Suns. After a cagey first period, a second-half onslaught saw them run out convincing 5-0 winners.

Heidelberg last won the tournament in 2017 in dramatic fashion, overcoming Bentleigh Greens 5-4 in a penalty shootout after being deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of extra time.
