Maria Sakkari advances as Ruse retires at Qatar Open

Maria Sakkari progressed to the second round of the Qatar Open after Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse was forced to retire on Sunday, February 9 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

The Greek, ranked No 29, was leading 4-6, 6-3, 4-0 when Ruse, ranked No 112, withdrew from the match due to injury on Sunday afternoon.

Sakkari will now face second seed Iga Swiatek in the next round.
