Poland launches investigation after murder of Polish woman in Greece

Poland’s Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro has ordered an investigation into the murder of a Polish woman in Greece on Sunday.

Anastazja Rubińska, a 27-year-old from the Polish city of Wrocław, went missing on June 12 on the Greek island of Kos where she worked in a hotel. Her disappearance was reported to police the next day by her boyfriend, who works in the same hotel.

Rubińska’s body was found, reportedly naked from the waist down, on Sunday around one kilometre from the home of a 32-year-old Bangladeshi man who had been arrested earlier on suspicion of being connected to Rubińska’s disappearance.

According to Ekathimerini, the man, who has so far been charged with kidnapping, is the main murder suspect and will be detained until he testifies.

In response, Polish Minister Ziobro has ordered Polish prosecutors to investigate the murder. They would immediately request evidence from the Greek authorities, he added.

A few hours later, Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also issued a statement and said his government will seek the extradition of the Bangladeshi murder suspect.

“The perpetrator must face very severe consequences,” the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter. “Therefore, we will ask Greece to extradite the suspect to stand before a Polish court and receive the highest possible sentence.”

Greece defeated by France in Euro 2024 qualifier but not without a fight

Greece’s national football team fought it out against France on Tuesday morning (AEST) in a Euro 2024 qualifier match, but they were defeated 1-0.

Striker Kylian Mbappe netted a second-half penalty to claim victory for France.

But the 10-men Greek team still fought valiantly with Odysseas Vlachodimos going on the offensive to block goal attempts by France such as Jules Kounde’s volley.

France were awarded a penalty early in the second half after Antoine Griezmann, looking to connect with a cross from the left, was hit in the head by Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Vlachodimos parried Mbappe’s spot kick but it had to be taken again as the keeper had left his goal line too early.

Mbappe found the top corner on his second attempt to score and Greece’s hopes were further dashed when Mavropanos picked up a straight red card when he took down Kolo Muani, who was rushing towards goal.

This was Greece’s first defeat in the Euro 2024 qualifiers for Group B. They are currently standing in second place against other nations such as Ireland, the Netherlands and Gibraltar. They will next face the Netherlands.

Australian Hellenic Choir’s night of music nostalgia for Greek cinema’s ‘Golden Years’

Sydneysiders were taken on a nostalgic journey through Greek cinema’s ‘Golden Years’ at Randwick’s Ritz Cinema on Sunday, June 18 thanks to a spectacular performance by the Australian Hellenic Choir (AHC).

Under instruction by the AHC’s Music Director Leon Vitogiannis, the choir had the packed-out theatre singing along to the greatest movie hits from Greek cinema, including The Boys from Piraeus (from the film Never on a Sunday) and Don’t Ask The Sky (from the film The Island of the Brave).

They were accompanied by Stefanos Maragkakis on the piano, Perry Tsepetzis and Thanasis Pylarinos on the bouzouki, and Nikos Sousamidis on the guitar.

In the background, an interactive movie crafted by award-winning director Eirini Alligiannis showcased corresponding movies scenes featuring famous names such as Aliki Vougiouklaki, Dimitri Horn, Sophia Loren, Tolis Voskopoulos, Tzeni Karezi and Melina Mercouri.

There was also a medley tribute to Manolis Chiotis, who is considered one of the greatest bouzouki soloists of all time.

The event concluded with a presentation of flowers to Mr Vitogiannis, Ms Alligiannis and the President of the AHC, Jim Tsolakis, followed by the obligatory group shop.

One attendee, Vicki, told The Greek Herald on the night her favourite part was seeing the performance of the song Get Up and Dance Sirtakis from the film My Socialist Daughter, which featured a backdrop of Aliki Vougiouklaki dancing.

“It was a great afternoon that really gave me a sense of nostalgia for the great films from Greece’s ‘golden’ cinema years,” she said.

NSW Government leaders hail multilingualism at gala dinner

The NSW Premier Chris Minns has told the annual dinner of the NSW Federation of Community Language Schools that one third of the state’s school students have family ties to a language other than English.

“It is a tremendous asset for our economy in a globalised world,” Mr Minns said. “We want to make it easier and more affordable for every child who wants to learn a language to do so.

“Community language schools are the bridge that connects children with their heritage and with the culture of their families.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Prue Car also congratulated the Federation on the 45th anniversary of co-ordinating the teaching of community languages in the state.

“For generations, they have helped build social cohesion in one of the most culturally diverse states in the world where more than 270 languages are spoken,” the Minister said.

“It is our responsibility now to cherish and preserve this linguistic wealth for generations to come.

“The Minns Government recognises the value in maintaining a child’s second language and is committed to providing more funding to the Community Languages Schools Program.

“There are currently 72 languages taught in schools like yours, in 565 locations, to more than 33,000 students.”

The work of the Federation was also supported in speeches by the Leader of the Opposition, Mark Speakman, the Secretary of the Department of Education, Murat Dizdar, the Chief Executive Officer of Multicultural NSW, Joseph La Posta, the Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure, and the CEO of the Federation, Michael Christodoulou, among many others.

The President of the Federation, Lucia Johns, told the dinner guests: “At the Federation, our focus is on the children growing up in Australia as Australians.”

“These are children who benefit from their family background, language and culture. The Federation does whatever possible to help communities maintain their language and culture and to keep them alive in NSW and Australia,” Ms Johns added.

Greek Community of Melbourne students visit Bonegilla migrant centre

On Sunday, June 19, the students of the Language and Culture Schools of the Greek Community in Melbourne (GCM) visited the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre.

This activity was part of their preparation for the oral examinations of the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education).

The students had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge about the historical parameters and living conditions of the early migrants during the decades of the ’50s to ’70s through lectures by the Centre’s officials, on-site exploration of the accommodations, and educational materials that were distributed to them.

The students showed a particular interest in the content of their educational excursion and enjoyed the experience, which will undoubtedly accompany them over time.

The Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre started at the end of World War II when millions of migrants left their countries in search of a better fortune.

The military facilities were transformed into a reception and training centre for migrants. The number of migrants who passed through the centre between 1947 and 1971 reached 300,000.

Ada Nicodemou nominated for 2023 TV Week Logie Awards

We’re just weeks away from the 2023 TV Week Logie Awards and the nominations are officially in.

Ada Nicodemou is a finalist in the Silver Logie category for Most Popular Actress.

Ada has become a fan favourite playing Leah Patterson for the last 22 years in the Seven Network show Home and Away. She has been nominated a number of times for the prestigious Logies.

The Greek-Cypriot is the third longest actor in an Australian TV soap opera.

According to news.com.au, alongside Ada in the same category are Celeste Barber, Emily Symons, Julia Zemiro, Kitty Flanagan, and Lynne McGranger.

In other categories, Leigh Sales might no longer be the face of the ABC’s 7.30, but the flagship current affairs show has her gunning for a Gold Logie for the first time in her decades-long media career.

The awards are set to take place at The Star in Sydney on July 30.

Alison Duncan appointed Australia’s new Ambassador to Greece

Ms Alison Duncan has been appointed as Australia’s next Ambassador to Greece, according to a statement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Ms Duncan will be taking over from outgoing Ambassador Arthur Spyrou, and will also be accredited to Bulgaria and Romania.

Ms Duncan is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Assistant Secretary of the Consular Communications and Policy Branch. She has previously served overseas in Indonesia, New Zealand and Solomon Islands.

In her statement, Ms Wong stressed the “enduring relationship” and strong economic partnership between Australia and Greece.

“Australia’s trade and investment relationship with Greece is growing. In 2021-22, two-way goods and services trade with Greece was $2.2 billion with Australian companies present in Greece supporting its energy and infrastructure sector,” Ms Wong said.

“Australia will continue working with Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and other European Union member states to conclude an ambitious and comprehensive trade agreement between Australia and the EU as soon as possible.”

Ms Wong also thank outgoing Ambassador Spyrou “for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania since 2019.”

Archbishop Makarios of Australia makes historic visits to Wagga Wagga and Albury

Archbishop Makarios of Australia made historic visits to the New South Wales regional cities of Wagga Wagga and Albury over the weekend.

Archbishop Makarios first visited Wagga Wagga on Saturday, June 17 to preside over the Hierarchical Vespers Service at the Holy Church of the Dormition of Our Lady.

The event was the first time in 43 years a Greek Orthodox Archbishop had visited Wagga Wagga.

During the service, there were a number of officials and VIP guests in attendance including the Archiepiscopal Vicar of Canberra, Bishop Bartholomew of Charioupolis; the Catholic Bishop of Wagga Wagga Mark Edwards OMI; the Independent Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr; the President of the Wagga Wagga Greek Orthodox Community, Kosta Papaioannou; and the President of the Greek Community of Canberra, John Loukadellis.

When addressing the congregation on the day, Archbishop Makarios expressed his thanks to those present and said he would always support the local Greek Orthodox community.

“We want you to feel that all together we are a family working towards the glory of Christ and the Church,” the Archbishop said. “I do not want you to think that you here are forgotten souls. We love you, we have you in our thoughts and prayers.”

Wagga Wagga MP Dr McGirr also gave an address and explained his personal connection to the local Greek community and thanked them for keeping the flame of Hellenism alive.

“The hospitality and community spirit of the Greek Orthodox Parish & Community of Wagga Wagga is wonderful to see,” Dr McGirr said.

The next day, on Sunday, June 18, Archbishop Makarios paid his first-ever visit to Albury, which is located on the border of NSW and Victoria. He presided over the Matins and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the church of The Holy Archangels.

The Archbishop was welcomed to Albury by the local Greek community; Bishop Bartholomew; Member for Albury, Justin Clancy; Albury Mayor Kylie King; Albury Deputy Mayor Steve Bowen; and the President of the Parish – Community of The Holy Archangels, Elias Andronikos.

In a speech at the church, Archbishop Makarios thanked the community and stressed that Bishop Bartholomew and Father Agathangelos Masteas will continue to serve the local communities.

Nick Dinakis remains in hospital after Hunter Valley deadly bus crash

Melbourne real estate agent Nick Dinakis remains in hospital after he was among 35 passengers who rode the ill-fated bus from a wedding in the New South Wales Hunter Valley region on June 12.

According to The Herald Sun, Dinakis has been moved from the Intensive Care Unit at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle to a less serious unit and is making “positive steps towards recovery.”

Dinakis attended the wedding of Madeleine Edsell and Mitchell Gaffney on Sunday with his partner Darcy Bulman. The pair was snapped smiling in a photo together at the Wandin Estate venue just hours before tragedy unfolded and they were involved in the deadly bus crash.

Ms Bulman was identified as the tenth wedding guest who lost her life in the Hunter Valley smash.

Tributes have since flowed for Ms Bulman on social media with friends calling her a “wonderful” person.

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Steve Dimopoulos, said the crash was an “extraordinary tragedy” after such a joyful event.

“It’s all too close to many of us in terms of a wedding celebration being a place of joy and (that has) turned into such a tragedy,” Dimopoulos said.

Survivors of deadly migrant shipwreck off Greece describe their ordeal

Ekathimerini has published parts from the depositions of two survivors of the deadly boat tragedy in which more than 500 migrants are feared to have drowned in international waters.

The depositions belong to two migrants, 23-year-old Hassan from Syria and 24-year-old Rana from Pakistan, who described their journey from Libya.

Hassan mentioned that during the four days boat journey they were given “minimal food and dirty water.” He paid 10 euros to one of the 15 passengers who were working for the traffickers in order to move to the boat deck because he was struggling to breathe.

The boat captain, whom the passengers thought had lost his way, only called for help on his satellite phone on Tuesday night.

According to AP News, when the Greek coast vessel arrived during the night, the trawler suddenly capsized and Hassan found himself in the water. The Greek coast guard rescued him and others, he said, lifting them into an inflatable boat. Two or three other ships came during the night to help.

In all, 104 survivors were rescued and 78 bodies retrieved.

Rana, a Pakistani citizen whose wife and children did not survive the shipwreck, described how after leaving Libya on June 9, the engine stopped after three days at sea. Despite a crew member fixing it many times, the engine continued to malfunction.  

Suddenly, Rana said, the boat started sinking on one side and taking on water. In the ensuing panic, many rushed to the opposite side and it was then that the boat capsized. Rana jumped into the sea and, despite not knowing how to swim, stayed afloat for a few minutes until a “large ship” retrieved him.
