Results announced for Greece’s regional elections

On Sunday, 8 October, the votes were counted and the outcomes of the elections for seven different regions across Greece were announced.

Former Minister Nikos Hardalias, who is supported by New Democracy, was elected for the Attica region. Giorgos Ioakimidis, an independent candidate backed by SYRIZA, came in second place.

For the Central Macedonia region, winning over 60 per cent of the vote was Apostolos Tzitzikostas. Christos Papastergiou, who is supported by PASOK, secured second place.

Regional governor Nektarios Farmakis, who is supported by New Democracy, was elected again for the Western Greece region. Spyros Skiadaresis, who is supported by PASOK, came in second place.

Alexandros Karchimanis, who is supported by New Democracy, was elected for the Epirus Region. Ioannis Stefos, who is supported by SYRIZA, received second place.

George Hatzimarkos was elected for the South Aegean region, securing 66 per cent of voters. Nikiforos Papanikolas from PASOK came second.

Fanis Spanos, who is supported by New Democracy, claimed the winning candidate title for the Central Greece region. Apostolos Glestsos, an independent candidate supported by SYRIZA, came in at second place.

Stavros Arnaoutakis, who is supported by PASOK, won in the Crete region by close to 70 per cent. Spyros Danellis came second.

The regions going through to runoff elections:

Ekathimerini reported that six regions are set to go to a runoff vote as no candidate received over 50.1 per cent of the votes to be elected.

In the capital Athens, incumbent mayor, Kostas Bakoyannis, came just short of outright victory, polling almost as much as he did in 2019.

For Eastern Macedonia and the Thrace region, Christos Metios, who is supported by New Democracy, took the lead with 41 per cent of the voters. Christodoulos Topsidis, an independent candidate, follows with close to 35 per cent.

Alkiviadis Stefanis, who is supported by New Democracy, is in the lead for the North Aegean region with 40 per cent of voters. Konstantinos Moutzouris, a candidate who is running as an independent, is currently in second position.

For the Western Macedonia region, its a close competition between Giorgos Kasapidis and Giorgos Amanatidis.

Konstantinos Agorastos, who is supported by New Democracy, has gained 41.5 per cent of voters for the Thessaly region. Dimitrios Kouretas, an independent candidate with the support of SYRIZA and PASOK, is sitting at 34.5 per cent.

Ioannis Trepeklis, from New Democracy and runs with the independent alliance “Ionia Epochi” (Ionian Era), is sitting at a vote share of 30 per cent for the Ionian Islands. Current regional governor, Jodi Kratsa Tsangaropoulo, who is supported by New Democracy, is in second place with a vote share of 28.5 per cent.

Dimitris Ptohos, who is supported by New Democracy, leads with a vote share close to 42 per cent for the Peloponnese region. Petros Tatoulis is in second place with 32 per cent.
