Pope Leo XIV has underscored the importance of Christian unity as he prepares for his first apostolic journey abroad, travelling to Asia Minor with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea.
He said the trip is centred on commemorating “the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and of the Christian Credo,” and on honouring “the person of Jesus Christ.”
“A few days ago, the Catholic Church published an apostolic letter that speaks precisely about the importance of Christian unity, which can also be a source of peace for the entire world. Our Christian witness is needed,” the Pope told Athens–Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).
Pope Leo XIV added that he has met Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on several previous occasions and believes the visit will offer “an excellent opportunity to advance the unity of all Christians.”
