Maria Dimopoulos AM appointed CEO at Settlement Council of Australia

·

The board of the Settlement Council of Australia has announced the appointment of Maria Dimopoulos AM as its next CEO.

Maria has an impressive career advocating for human rights and social justice informed policy across all tiers of government. Her extensive relationships within the settlement sector and deep knowledge of multicultural communities across Australia, place her in an ideal position to lead the organisation and sector in navigating future challenges and opportunities.

Maria’s tireless advocacy for multiculturalism, support for culturally and linguistically diverse women and the prevention of domestic violence earned her the Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order Of Australia award. She has held numerous positions advising government including the National Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity, the National Council to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children and the Federal Multicultural Affairs Access and Equity Inquiry panel.

“It is a profound honour to lead the Settlement Council of Australia at this pivotal moment. As we welcome those seeking refuge and renewal, we do so on the unceded lands of First Nations peoples—whose enduring sovereignty must ground our shared story of belonging,” Maria said.

“After working in the fields of human rights and shaping multicultural policy for much of my life, I remain deeply committed to the vital role of our sector at the heart of settlement. I am humbled to build on the powerful legacy of this organisation and those who have led it with vision and purpose.

“Lasting change begins with dignity, justice, and collective action. I step into this role with open hands and a hopeful heart, ready to help shape a future where our communities are empowered, our work is valued, and our national narrative reflects the full richness of who we are.”

Melissa Monteiro, the Chair of the Settlement Council of Australia, is delighted to welcome Maria Dimopoulos as CEO.

“Her leadership and deep commitment to multicultural Australia will strengthen our sector and drive positive change,” she said.

With Maria at the helm, the Settlement Council of Australia is exceptionally well placed to build on the outstanding achievements of previous CEO, Sandra Elhelw, including providing a cohesive voice to represent settlement agencies across Australia as we strive to ensure the best possible outcomes for migrants and refugees who are making Australia their home.
