Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ wedding dress to be auctioned

·

The wedding dress of Aristotle Onassis‘ wife, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is set to be auctioned at Bonhams.

According to uk.news.yahoo.com, the online auction will take place from September 16 to 26, with the starting price estimated between $8,000 and $12,000.

Although it was Jacqueline’s second wedding, the dress held deeper personal significance for her than her first. This time, she had the freedom to choose her attire, marking a pivotal moment in her life.

On October 20, 1968, she wed Aristotle on his private island, Skorpios. She wore a two-piece outfit from Valentino’s spring 1968 haute couture collection: a beige lace turtleneck bodice with tiny pearl buttons and bishop sleeves, paired with a pleated, above-the-knee skirt. She completed the look with a simple bow in her hair.

The dress is being sold by a private couple who had become close friends with both Aristotle and Jacqueline while aboard the yacht Christina O, named after Onassis’ daughter.

The Valentino wedding dress marked a bold, fashion-forward choice. Unlike traditional bridal gowns of the era, Kennedy Onassis’ outfit was shorter and more contemporary, setting a trend for modern brides in the late 1960s.
