Greece will soon inaugurate its first specialised dementia center, created to respond to the growing burden of cognitive health issues. Scheduled to open in October, the center is the product of a joint effort by major philanthropic foundations and the National Bank of Greece, according to ekathimerini.com.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed the government’s backing for the project, describing dementia as “a public health problem which will only get worse unless science works its miracle.”
The facility will unite leading experts from Greece and abroad, including prominent researchers from the Greek diaspora, with on-the-ground healthcare providers. Its goals include strengthening early detection, prevention, and treatment, developing innovative pharmaceutical approaches, setting unified medical standards, overseeing practices, and providing training for doctors and caregivers.
“We often allow people to reach an advanced stage before intervening. Then it’s too late,” noted one of the project’s organizers.
