Ersin Tatar compares Turkish Cypriots to Palestinians

·

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has drawn a controversial comparison between Cyprus and the Israel-Palestine conflict, claiming that Turkish Cypriots face the same oppression as Palestinians.

In a social media post, Tatar criticised Western foreign policy, saying the world is ruled by an “arrogant” mindset that has brought it to the “brink of World War III.”

Referencing recent strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian nuclear sites, Tatar said they showed “how unjust the world we live in is,” and condemned the belief that “it can be mine, but not yours” as dangerously one-sided.

“Our expectation is that diplomacy be implemented as soon as possible,” he added.

Tatar argued that “no country—Western or Muslim—is above condemnation,” and stated: “We see this in the most painful way in the lives of Palestinians in Gaza.”

He went on to claim that “our southern neighbour is no different from Israel,” accusing the Republic of Cyprus of viewing Turkish Cypriots as a minority and seeking their elimination “at the first opportunity, just like the Palestinians in Gaza.”

Despite these remarks, Tatar insisted that Turkish Cypriots are not “doomed to live by scenarios written by others,” and pledged: “We will shape our future with our own hands and our collective will.”
