Dendias pledges Greece’s full support to Cyprus amid regional tensions

·

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has reaffirmed Athens’ full support for Cyprus during a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Vasilis Palmas in Nicosia, as regional tensions escalate.

“Greece is here and will remain here throughout the crisis to contribute in every way possible to the defence of the Republic of Cyprus, in order to protect all legal residents of the island and to avert all threats and any illegal actions,” Dendias said.

He stressed: “Cyprus is not participating in military operations against Iran. Consequently, we emphasise that targeting countries that are not participating in hostilities is not permitted in any way.”

The two ministers confirmed the excellent level of bilateral defence cooperation, assessed the security situation, and discussed coordination of defence actions.

Following the talks, Dendias visited the “Andreas Papandreou” Air Base in Paphos, where two pairs of Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jets had landed.
