Migrant experiences inspire reflections at Greek Poetry Afternoon in Melbourne

·

On Sunday, June 22, the Greek Australian Cultural League (GACL) held its annual Poetry Afternoon on the last day of this year’s Antipodean Palette Exhibition at Steps Gallery in Carlton.

This event is part of a long tradition that has become one of the mainstays of the League’s activities.

Readers were able to present their poetry against the backdrop of amazing artworks. The guiding theme for this year was “Journeys and Meanderings”.

The theme brought out many thoughts of the migrant experience in the presenters, giving the event a decidedly Greek flavour, with readings split equally between English and Greek.

The event was introduced by the GACL Vice President, Andrea Garivaldis, and convened by George and Monika Athanasiou.

The poets presenting this year were: Alex Skovron, Angela Costi, Christos Fifis, Petr Malapanis, Paraskevi Dentsas, who was also one of the artists exhibiting her work, Monika Athanasiou, Dean Kalimniou and Dean’s daughter, Alexandra Kalimniou, who read a poem by her sister, Helene.

The afternoon closed with refreshments and mingling. It was a great success on an otherwise grey Melbourne winter’s day.
