Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney to mark bicentenary of Messolonghi Exodus

·

The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney Book Club is set to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi with a special historical and cultural presentation later this month.

The presentation will be delivered by Tina Contos (Convenor) and Eleni Kandylas-Mallios from the Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney, as well as President of the Philanthropic Association of NSW “Messolonghi” Sam Pashalidis, and prominent solicitor Costas Vertzayias.

The talk, to be held on Saturday, May 23, will highlight the significance of the Massacre and Exodus of Messolonghi, during which thousands of Greeks lost their lives in the Greek War of Independence. It will explore how the events of April 10, 1826 sparked a wave of Philhellenism around the world and strengthened international support for the Greek cause.

The presentation will examine the exodus in detail, featuring famous Philhellenes who wrote poetry inspired by the tragedy, notable artworks depicting the events, and reflections from historian Maria Efthimiou on its historical importance.

Attendees will also hear about Greek heroine Eleni Staikou, the poetry of Dionysios Solomos, and enjoy music and dance from the Messolonghi region.

The majority of the presentation will be in English with Greek notes for those who require them. Afternoon tea will be provided.
