Brisbane honours ANZAC spirit with Greek Orthodox memorial services

·

His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane led ANZAC Day commemorations on Saturday, April 25, conducting a Memorial Service at the Parish and Community of Saint George in South Brisbane.

He was assisted by Father Athanasios Athanasiadis, with the service followed by a wreath-laying ceremony in the church courtyard, including the national anthems of Greece and Australia, a minute’s silence, the recitation of the Ode and the Last Post.

Further commemorations followed at the southern end of the Victoria Bridge, where wreaths were laid in memory of the late Hector Vasyli and in honour of the Dungarees.

The group then proceeded to the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square for another Memorial Service and wreath-laying ceremony conducted by Bishop Bartholomew.

Attendees included the Honorary Consul-General of Greece in Queensland, George Mastrocostas, along with representatives from local Greek Orthodox and community organisations, including the President of the Cathedral of Brisbane Luke Comino, Parish President Freda Valisakis, and Brisbane Hellenic RSL Sub Branch President Vlas Efstathis.

Bishop Bartholomew conveyed the love, respect, and blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia to those present.
