·

May 1, also known as Protomagia or Labor Day in Greece, was celebrated with a big gathering at Cardinia Park in Melbourne, Victoria on Sunday, April 30.

The celebration was organised by the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizen Clubs of Melbourne & Victoria.

Around 1000 people gathered at Cardinia Park on Sunday, including Lee Tarlamis MP. Those present enjoyed dancing as they wore flower crowns and listened to music.

Everyone also shared meals and drinks such as homemade spanakopita and cold frappe.

Protomagia in Greece is a day for people to unite with friends and families and welcome the change of season with picnics.

Greeks also make flower ‘stefania’ (wreaths), while the rights of workers are defended at rallies across the country.
