FIFA recommends all international matches cancelled as Euro 2020 approaches

·

Uefa has called an emergency meeting for Tuesday to discuss the possibility of postponing Euro 2020, after Fifa recommended that all impending internationals should be called off.

European football’s governing body will hold video conference meetings to discuss its response to the coronavirus outbreak. Those discussions will cover all domestic and European competitions, including Euro 2020.

Euro 2020 is due to take place from 12 June-12 July at venues across Europe. The Women’s Euros are scheduled to begin in England from 11 July-1 August 2021.

Postponing or cancelling the tournament falls under the jurisdiction of European football’s governing body, but their world equivalent has said games in March and April should be called off “to avoid any unnecessary health risks and also situations of potential sporting unfairness”.

The highest level of football in England has already been suspended until 3 April, with matches also halted in Scotland, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United States. World Cup qualifiers in both Asia and South America have also been postponed.

“The situation is rapidly evolving across the world and various international travel restrictions have already been imposed by different public authorities,” a statement read.

“The final decision on this issue rests with the respective competition organisers or relevant member association in case of friendlies.”
