The Hellenic Medical Society of Australia (HMSA) in collaboration with PRONIA invite the broader community and interested parties to register and attend an educational event on back pain. The event will be held on Sunday 31st May 130pm to 4pm, at the New Footscray Hospital Community Centre.
Back pain is very common in the Greek population. Approximately 4 million Australians live with daily back pain and up to 80% of people will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.
This event will help to unpack the causes, when to seek help, pathways for diagnosis and options for the management of back pain. A multi-disciplinary approach is often required and this event will be a panel discussion, with questions encouraged from the audience. The four experts will include:
- Dr James Dimou – Neurosurgeon: Who will discuss red flags and indications for surgery and the post-operative course.
- Dr Arete Kouteris – General Practitioner with an interest in medical acupuncture: Who will discuss the assessment of back pain, pain management and when referrals are made for surgery, physiotherapy or alternative therapies including acupuncture.
- Dr Stephen Fasulakis – Interventional Radiologist: Who will discuss the imaging for back pain assessment as well as radiologically-guided treatment options including steroid injections.
- Ms Debbie Spanos – Physiotherapist: Who will bring her wealth of experience and discuss the role of exercise and movement in the management of back pain.
The event will be MC’d by Dr Dean Kotsianis, who is a Junior Doctor at Western Health.
