Australia’s Ambassador to Greece, Alison Duncan, has presented a commemorative collector’s coin marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete to Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Diaspora Affairs, Ioannis Loverdos.
During the meeting on Thursday, May 7, Ms Duncan formally handed over the coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint, honouring Australian soldiers who fought alongside Greek forces during the Second World War.
The Ambassador said the coin symbolised the deep friendship and historical ties between Greece and Australia, forged through shared sacrifice and struggle, while also highlighting the enduring significance of the Battle of Crete in the collective memory of both nations and within the ANZAC tradition.
Mr Loverdos thanked the Australian government for the initiative, noting that such gestures reinforce the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Greece and Australia.
