Preston parish honours Fr Ierotheos Kourtesis as retirement announced

·

A recent celebration at the Sts Cyril & Methodius Greek Orthodox Church in Preston saw the announcement of Very Reverend Archimandrite Ierotheos Kourtesis’ retirement after 60 years since his ordination to the priesthood in 1966.

The announcement was delivered by His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora after he presided over the Great Vespers on the eve of the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the Divine Liturgy.

At his own request, Fr Ierotheos will conclude his long service in July, and Bishop Evmenios expressed deep respect and gratitude for his decades of service. He described him as “very beloved” by the local community after all his contributions.

He added that Fr Ierotheos would likely continue to serve after retirement, including at the Parish of Saints Methodius and Cyril and at the Monastery of Panagia, Axion Esti, in Northcote.

Fr Ierotheos thanked the faithful for their support throughout his priestly ministry, particularly over the past 15 years in Preston. He paid special tribute to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia for his support and honours since arriving in Australia, and also reflected on his journey from Corfu to Australia. He recalled his grandfather’s advice to remain patient, persistent and humble.

He concluded by assuring parishioners that he would stay connected to the community after retiring, adding that he would remain accessible and willing to help whenever needed.
