Sydney United 58 responded in style to last week’s setback, securing their 11th win of the season with a commanding 3-0 victory over traditional rivals Sydney Olympic at Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.
In a clash rich with history, United 58 made a statement — not only bouncing back from their first defeat of the campaign but also reclaiming top spot on the ladder with a clinical and controlled performance.
The hosts started brightly and were rewarded in the 17th minute when Mason Wells broke the deadlock, cutting inside and firing a precise effort toward the near post that left Olympic goalkeeper Josip Orlovic stranded.
While Olympic showed resilience and remained competitive throughout the first half, United 58 gradually asserted their dominance, creating the better chances as the contest unfolded.
They came close to doubling their advantage shortly after the opener, with Carlos De Oliveira’s header drifting narrowly past the back post, while Olympic responded through Brooklyn Mallia, whose curling effort sailed just over the crossbar.
Both De Oliveira and Gabriel Tilo continued to threaten, going agonisingly close as the match delivered a steady flow of attacking football. Despite Olympic’s determined defensive efforts, United 58 looked the more dangerous side heading into the break.
Olympic came out with intent in the second half but were quickly reminded of United’s attacking threat. Tilo was denied what looked like a certain goal, with Orlovic producing a stunning fingertip save to keep his side in the contest.
However, as the hour mark passed, the game firmly shifted in United 58’s favour. The hosts began to control possession and dictate the tempo, gradually wearing down Olympic’s resistance despite some positive energy from the visitors’ substitutes.
The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when De Oliveira produced a moment of quality, striking superbly from the edge of the box to double United’s lead.
Just five minutes later, the result was beyond doubt. De Oliveira completed his brace after being expertly set up by Tomislav Ozanic, capping off a clinical late surge from the hosts.
In the end, Sydney United 58 secured not just the three points, but a statement victory — one that reaffirms their title credentials as they return to the top of the ladder.
Post-match, United 58 coach Miro Vlastelica praised his side’s response following last week’s defeat.
“It was a good performance, we controlled the game well today and it was good to bounce back from a loss last week,” he said.
“Now we move on to a big game next week against APIA.”
Sydney Olympic coach Michael Mileto acknowledged his side fell short on the day but remained focused on regrouping.
“It was hard for us to bounce back after Wednesday night, but we were not good enough today — we weren’t tight enough, not close enough. We’ll regroup and go again,” he said.
“We didn’t have the legs today, it just wasn’t our day.”
