Greece’s women’s water polo team has suffered a 17-6 defeat to Australia in the World Cup qualifiers in Sydney, but remains in contention for a place in the Super Final scheduled for 22–26 July.
Haris Pavlidis’ side fell behind early, with Australia building a dominant 8-1 lead in the opening quarter and maintaining control throughout the match.
While Greece showed improved competitiveness in the middle stages, they were unable to score in the final quarter as Australia closed out a comfortable win.
Quarter scores were 8-1, 4-3, 2-2, 3-0.
Despite the heavy loss, Greece’s qualification chances remain alive, dependent on Japan defeating a lower-ranked opponent in the final matchday on Wednesday May 6 at 16:45.
Australia scorers included Halligan with four goals and Jakovic with four, while Greece’s goals came from Xenaki with three, Santa with two and Siouti with one.
