The Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia hosted its flagship annual gathering, Synapantema, which united Pontian communities from across the country for a four-day cultural program.
The Synapantema is held in a different state each year and 2026 saw the program held in Sydney from April 24 to 27.
Proceedings began on Friday with a group visit to Sydney Aquarium and youth networking drinks. The official opening night Parakath included dinner and live entertainment and was hosted by Panagia Soumela Sydney and Pontoxeniteas NSW.
Saturday’s program saw attendees participate in Anzac Day commemorations with a Dawn Service followed by the sold out Synapantema Dinner Dance in the evening.
The dinner dance saw 700 guests gather in what was one of the largest Australian Pontian events. Master of Ceremonies Efthymios Kallos opened the night, welcoming all attendees for a night of music and celebration. The most memorable moment of the night was when 180 students from seven Pontian Associations united for a magnificent dance performance.
International artists performing included Matthaios Tsahouridis accompanied by Giorgos Kortsinidis, Sakis Sotiriadis and Kostas Patrikas. Attendees of all ages took to the dance floor to celebrate the evening.
On Sunday, participants attended a Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern. They were then treated to a free workshop with Dr Mattheios Tsahouridis titled “The Pontic Lyra in Contemporary Greece: From Tradition to Invention” at the Tom Mann Theatre in Surry Hills.
The day also included a three-hour sunset Sydney Harbour cruise with canapés. The Sunday celebrations concluded with a traditional evening Parakath at the Pontian House with dinner and entertainment.
The four-day program concluded on Monday with an Anzac War Memorial wreath-laying service, a presentation on the Anzacs in Pontos from Kosta Pataridis and Dr Panayiotis Diamadis, and a community lunch.
The Federation represents nine Pontian associations across Australia and the program aims to strengthen cultural ties and celebrate Pontian heritage. Many participants travelled from multiple states to take part in the social and cultural events.
The Federation announced the 2027 Synapantema will be held in Canberra and then in Perth for 2028.
