Greece women’s water polo team beat Hungary to boost World Cup hopes in Sydney

·

The Greek women’s national water polo team delivered when it mattered most, defeating Hungary 14-9 to take a major step towards qualifying for the World Cup finals in Sydney.

In a crucial match for positions 5–8 in Group Three of the second phase, the “blue and white” imposed their tempo against a strong opponent and now need a fifth or sixth-place finish to secure their place at the World Cup (22–26 July).

Spain, the USA, the Netherlands and Italy have already qualified, while a sixth-place finish will also be enough if host nation Australia ends the tournament in the top five.

After a tightly contested first half (4-4), Haris Pavlidis’ side lifted their intensity in the third quarter to edge ahead (8-7), before sealing the result in the final period.

Siouti and Xenaki led the attack as Greece pulled away to a convincing 14-9 victory, sending a clear message in the race for qualification.
