Trial begins over leak of diaspora Greeks’ emails

·

A trial has opened in Athens over the alleged leak of diaspora Greeks’ email addresses from the Interior Ministry, reportedly used by Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou to solicit votes in the June 2024 European elections.

Four defendants, including Asimakopoulou, deny charges of breaching civil service secrets and privacy laws. Her lawyers said she “did not know that [the list] was secret,” or “that it was illegal” to use it.

A total of 92 diaspora Greeks have joined the case, claiming their details submitted to vote by post were later used for political outreach.

One London-based witness told the court: “It’s shocking when you give your particulars to the government and they end up elsewhere … it’s hard to believe that the officials who handle such sensitive personal information can leak it,” adding: “Our faith in the Greek state has been shaken.”

Lawyer Vassilis Sotiropoulos said his clients have already won three lawsuits against the government. The trial will resume on May 8.
