Enthronement of Bishop Athinagoras to take place in Canberra this weekend

·

The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia (GOAA) has announced that the Enthronement of His Grace Bishop Athinagoras of Canberra will take place on Saturday, 6 December 2025.

The ceremony will be held at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Kingston, Canberra and will follow a Synodal Divine Liturgy at 7:30am, presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.

In the Orthodox Church, an enthronement formally marks the moment a bishop assumes leadership of his diocese. The service traditionally includes the official reception of the bishop, the reading of the letter of appointment, and his seating in the cathedra (bishop’s throne) for the first time.

The Bishop is then vested with the symbols of his episcopal office and presides over the Divine Liturgy as the canonical shepherd of the diocese.

The Archdiocese has invited the faithful to attend the Enthronement, describing the event as a moment of profound spiritual joy for the local Church.
