$2 million funding boost pledged for Hellenic Studies Foundation in SA

·

The Hellenic Studies Foundation has welcomed a major funding commitment announced at the St George
Community 65-Year Celebration
on 6 September 2025 by South Australian Minister Tom Koutsantonis.

Minister Koutsantonis announced that should the Labor Government be re-elected, the Foundation will receive an additional $2 million in funding to continue and expand its programs supporting Greek language, culture and heritage in South Australia.

For more than 20 years, the Hellenic Studies Foundation has delivered educational programs, cultural initiatives and community partnerships to promote Greek language and heritage.

The additional funding will enable the Foundation to strengthen its existing partnerships with schools, universities, and community organisations, and extend opportunities for more young people to engage with their cultural roots.

Chair of the Hellenic Studies Foundation, The Hon. Greg Crafter AO, said the announcement was a significant step in supporting SA’s multicultural future.

“This funding extension ensures the Foundation can continue its important work in promoting Greek language education and cultural preservation. It will have a lasting impact, helping us to further enrich the lives of future generations,” Mr Crafter said.

University of South Australia Vice Chancellor, Professor David Lloyd, also welcomed the announcement, saying, “The Hellenic Studies Foundation has an important role not only in education but in cultural continuity. We’re grateful for the Foundation’s support of our activities nurturing and celebrating Modern Greek language, history and heritage, ensuring that future generations can remain deeply connected to their roots.”

St George College Principal, Guy Cassarchis, said the funding would make a tangible difference to students and families.

“Our students benefit enormously from learning language and culture as part of their education. Continued support from the Hellenic Studies Foundation will ensure that these programs remain strong and accessible for years to come,” Mr Cassarchis said.

The Hellenic Studies Foundation is committed to advancing multiculturalism and enhancing SA’s educational and cultural landscape through programs that preserve and celebrate Greek heritage.
