Cyprus Community of NSW student wins Minister’s Award for Excellence in Greek

·

The Cyprus Community of NSW is celebrating a proud milestone after one of its students, Edward Evangelos Wilson, received the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement in Community Languages Schools.

This prestigious recognition, announced at the 2025 Minister’s Awards, marks the first time a student from the Cyprus Community’s Greek School has been named an award recipient.

Since 2018, the school has seen several of its students nominated, with many receiving Highly Commended recognition in the junior category.

Edward’s journey in Greek learning

Edward has been learning Greek since the age of four, studying with the Cyprus Community first in Stanmore and more recently in Petersham at the NSW School of Languages. Delivering his speech in Greek with composure and confidence, he described how Greek school has shaped his life.

“I have been learning Greek since I was four years old, and what I enjoy most in class is discovering Greek culture and history with my friends. The opportunities we are given are endless and fun—like excursions to museums, songs, theatrical plays, and many other activities. If I didn’t attend Greek school, I wouldn’t be able to communicate with my grandparents when I visit Greece,” Edward said.

He also reflected on the friendships and opportunities gained through Greek school, before thanking his family, teachers and mentors.

“I have also made many friends. If I stayed home, I wouldn’t have any friends—but now I do. For all of this, I would like to thank my mum, my dad, Mrs Olympia, and all my teachers and mentors for their support.”

A Principal’s pride

Greek School Principal Olympia Palamas said Edward’s recognition was the result of dedication and perseverance not just from the student himself, but from the entire community that supports the school.

“Every time we nominate, I always think ‘this is the one’, because I truly believe in my students and the potential they carry,” she told The Greek Herald.

“Edward was the first from our school to receive this award, but his success represents all our students, past and present. Hopefully, his achievement will open the way for many more to follow in the years ahead.”

Edward’s recognition is not only a personal achievement but also a landmark moment for the Cyprus Community’s Greek School, reaffirming its dedication to nurturing students who embrace language, culture and heritage with passion.
