Australia ranks with Canada and US as Greece’s most generous tourists

·

Travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Australia consistently rank as the most generous visitors to Greece, with spending levels well above the national average of €573 per person in 2024, euro2day has reported.

Canadians top the list, spending an average of €1,260 per trip—120% higher than the country’s average. Australians follow with €1,068, or 87% above the norm, while Americans complete the trio at €1,024 per person. Notably, U.S. visitors had the highest daily spending in 2024 at €107 per night, compared to €96 for Canadians and €92 for Australians.

Despite their high per capita spending, Australian tourism showed a sharp downturn between 2023 and 2024: arrivals fell by 37.8% (289,000 to 180,000), overnight stays dropped 40.5% (3.5 million to 2.1 million), and revenue plunged 58.3% (€460m to €192m). By contrast, Canadian visitors reduced arrivals by 3.6% but increased overnight stays by 9.2% and boosted revenue by 18.1% (€322m to €381m). U.S. tourism also grew: arrivals rose 10% (1.4m to 1.5m), receipts climbed 15.3% (€1.4b to €1.6b), though overnight stays dipped slightly by 1.4%.

Beyond these key markets, other notable shifts appeared. Bulgarian tourists registered the largest rise in average per capita spending at +24%, though their actual outlay remained low at €107. Israelis saw a 20% increase to €676, Romanians 18% to €396, and Spaniards 16% to €637.

On the downside, North Macedonian travelers slashed their average spend by 52% to just €35. Declines were also recorded among Swiss (-25%, to €730), Serbs (-23%, €289), French (-19%, €632), Danes (-18%, €597), and Austrians (-11%, €682).
