Elon Musk warns of Greece’s ‘death’ as school closures highlight population decline

·

Elon Musk has sounded an alarm over Greece’s demographic crisis after reports that 766 schools will shut this year due to dwindling student numbers. Sharing the news on X, he wrote “the death of Greece.”

Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki admitted classrooms “reflect the state of our maternity wards and birth rates, which have been falling for decades.”

Primary school enrolments have dropped by more than 111,000 since 2018, a 19% decline.

Greece’s fertility rate is just 1.35, with many women having children later in life.

Experts say the closures, mostly in rural areas, underscore the difficulty of reversing decades of population decline.
