Greek Australian ‘guru’ of food importing Tony Beris passes away

·

Anthony (Tony) Beris, founder of Delta Sales and a prominent figure in the Greek Australian community, has died in Melbourne at the age of 97.

Born in Methoni, Messinia, Beris migrated to Australia in 1956 and began working in imitation jewellery before moving into food.

In 1967, he co-founded Delta Sales with John Kotis, each investing $4,000.

From its Brunswick base, Delta became one of Australia’s leading food importers, supplying feta, olives, olive oil and other delicacies to major supermarkets.

Known as “The Guru,” Beris attributed success to loyal staff, financial prudence and foresight.

In 2020, aged 92, he sold Delta Sales to Hudson Food Group, keeping the company in Greek Australian hands.

Remembered as both philanthropist and businessman, Beris leaves behind a legacy of resilience, vision and community service.
