Maria Sakkari storms into US Open third round with dominant win

·

Maria Sakkari has advanced to the third round of the US Open after an impressive straight-sets victory over Hungary’s Ana Bondar, 6–3, 6–1.

The world No. 18 showed her class on court, dispatching her 28-year-old opponent (ranked No. 97) with ease to book her place among the last 32.

It marks Sakkari’s first appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2023.

Significantly, it is also the first time since 2021 – when she reached the semi-finals in New York – that the Greek star has progressed beyond the second round at the US Open.

Looking ahead, Sakkari is set for a challenging test against Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, ranked No. 22. The Greek has yet to beat Maia, losing all four of their previous encounters.
