Mytilenians strike gold at first-ever Hellenic Bowling Cup in Sydney

·

The inaugural Hellenic Bowling Cup rolled into action over the weekend, bringing together the Samian Brotherhood of Sydney & NSW ‘Lykourgos’, Kytherian Association of Australia, and Mytilenian Brotherhood of Sydney & NSW for a day of strikes, laughs, and community spirit.

Held in a vibrant and relaxed setting, the event marked the first official collaboration between the three associations in a bowling competition — an initiative that has already been declared an annual fixture.

With team scores calculated as an average over two games, the Mytilenians emerged victorious with a team score of 182, followed by Team Kythera with 168 and Team Samos narrowly behind at 167.

But beyond the pins and scores, the spirit of the day was about connection, camaraderie, and plenty of good-natured rivalry. The afternoon was filled with food, humour, and some particularly “experimental” bowling techniques that had attendees in stitches.

President of the Mytilenian Brotherhood, Peter Psomas, praised the event, saying: “A great day watching three associations coming together, working together, and having fun together was priceless. I’m looking forward to the 2026 Hellenic Bowling Cup.”

Emanuel Valageorgiou, President of the Samian Brotherhood, which initiated the event, added: “The inaugural Hellenic Bowling Cup was an overwhelming success. Participants and spectators alike had a fantastic time. It was a wonderful opportunity for members of the three associations to connect in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Events like this strengthen our shared bonds and foster mutual support for a sustainable future. We’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration.”

Kytherian Association President Barbara Zantiotis echoed the sentiment, adding: “I’m very proud of the strong relationship between our associations which enabled our communities to unite for an entertaining afternoon of friendly island rivalry. Thank you to the Samians for initiating this wonderful event and congratulations to the Mytilenians!”

While the Mytilenians may have claimed the trophy this time, all three groups agreed that the real winner was the Hellenic community spirit. Plans are already underway for the 2026 edition, with Team Lesvos set to host — and defend — the title.
