Wildfire forces evacuations on Greek island of Chios

·

More than 100 firefighters, backed by aircraft, battled a major wildfire near the main town of Chios on Sunday, June 22, prompting the evacuation of 12 areas on the eastern Aegean island.

The fire began as three separate blazes Sunday morning and quickly merged into one large front, driven by strong winds.

Reinforcements from Athens and Thessaloniki were deployed by ship, while 10 helicopters and two firefighting planes assisted until nightfall.

An arson investigation team has been sent to the island, authorities said.

Local media footage showed firefighters struggling against towering flames tearing through woodland and farmland.
