Player’s love for Ange Postecoglou overshadows new Spurs manager unveiling

·

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Brentford’s Thomas Frank as their new head coach on a three-year deal — but the club’s official announcement was overshadowed by a heartfelt tribute to Ange Postecoglou from defender Cristian Romero.

Less than an hour after Frank’s appointment was made public, Romero posted on social media thanking Postecoglou for “two incredible seasons,” calling him “a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best.”

The post made no mention of Frank, underlining the strong bond many players still feel toward the outgoing Australian manager.

“From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist,” Romero wrote. “Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters.”

Postecoglou was sacked last week despite leading Spurs to a historic 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final — their first European silverware in 41 years. However, a poor domestic Premier League campaign that saw the club finish 17th ultimately cost him his job.

Frank, 51, arrives from Brentford with a reputation for tactical flexibility and squad development. He led the Bees into the Premier League in 2021 and secured mid-table stability despite limited resources.

Frank will be joined at Tottenham by several key staff, including assistant Justin Cochrane and analyst Joe Newton, with his first competitive match coming in August’s UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.

While Spurs described Frank as “one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,” the lingering affection for Postecoglou from fans and players alike highlights the challenge facing his successor.
