Ange Postecoglou makes history as Spurs clinch Europa League title

·

Ange Postecoglou has cemented his place in football history, becoming the first male Greek Australian coach to win a major European trophy after leading Tottenham Hotspur to victory in the UEFA Europa League final.

Spurs defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a dramatic all-English showdown in Bilbao on Thursday morning (AEST), with a goal from Brennan Johnson in the 42nd minute securing the club’s first European silverware since 1984.

Pape Matar Sarr, carrying a slight injury into the match, delivered a superb cross from the left that wrong-footed the United defence. The ball deflected off Luke Shaw, allowing Johnson to stretch at the back post and get the faintest touch to steer it into the net.

The win is a personal triumph for the 59-year-old Greek Australian manager, who faced criticism throughout a rocky domestic campaign that saw Spurs languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table. He has previously said, “I always win things in my second year.”

The Europa League triumph now not only silences doubters but also guarantees Tottenham a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Postecoglou’s achievement is also a historic milestone for Australian and Greek football, as he becomes the first Greek Australian to coach to win a European final with a major club.

The match marked the second all-English Europa League final in six years, and Tottenham’s fourth win over United this season, having already bested them three times in domestic competition.
