UN Security Council extends Cyprus peacekeeping mandate for one year

·

The UN Security Council has renewed the mandate for the UN’s peacekeeping force (Unficyp) in Cyprus for one year.

This follows concerns raised over socio-economic inequalities that could deepen divisions, and the risk of “further estrangement” between both sides.

According to Cyprus Mail, the UN Security Council called for the reactivation of the Technical Committee on Education and for a de-escalation of tensions.

Both sides have also been called upon to engage with the UN’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, to find common ground that can lead to the resumption of talks.

The UN Security Council emphasised the importance of respecting the buffer zone’s integrity and Unficyp’s authority.

Addressing risks of “further estrangement,” the Security Council encouraged trade between the two sides to strengthen, and called for new crossing points.
