·

The Victorian football community is in mourning following the heartbreaking news of Keely Lockhart’s passing.

A beloved figure at Heidelberg United, Eltham Redbacks, and FC Bulleen Lions, Keely’s death has left a profound impact across clubs and communities where she was not only a formidable player but a passionate mentor and leader.

Keely, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, was remembered by Heidelberg United as a “true Heidelberg Warrior.” She had recently played her 50th game for the club, earning her place as a cornerstone of the women’s team and an inspiring coach in the community girls’ program since joining in 2019.

Her football achievements were many:

  • Five-time Premiership player (Heidelberg United, FC Bulleen Lions, Eltham Redbacks)
  • Two-time League Best & Fairest (State League 1 & 2)
  • Two-time League Leading Goal Scorer (State League 1 & 2)
  • Victorian State Representative
  • 99 NPL/WPL Victoria caps

Beyond her on-field success, Keely was known for her deep compassion, always supporting players, parents, and teammates. She frequently attended junior girls’ matches, encouraging younger players from the sidelines and inspiring the next generation of female footballers.

“She was a mentor, a leader and a friend to each of us,” Heidelberg United said in a statement. “Keely always put everyone around her first… The club is heartbroken by this loss.”

In her honour, a minute’s silence will be observed at this weekend’s NPLW and U20s matches across Victoria.

Support services are available for those affected:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14
  • Griefline: 1300 845 745
  • Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636

Lockhart’s legacy as a player, coach, and caring community member will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. The thoughts of the entire football family are with her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
